Xoala

UI-design for a new type of neo-bank

As Global Head of Product and Design, I collaborated with leadership to develop a cohesive branding and user interface for Xoala, emphasizing accessibility and modern aesthetics. By implementing dark mode and aligning the design with WCAG standards, we ensured compliance ahead of the European Accessibility Act while creating a visually distinct experience.

Work

We began the project with workshops alongside management to develop a business model canvas and establish the correct tone and feel for the brand. Together with Steve McDonald (Head of Brand) and Carolina Segerfeldt (Head of Marketing), we iterated on the branding, settling on a darker and more modern aesthetic to stand out from traditional banks.

We collaborated on creating a cohesive color palette that worked seamlessly for both general branding and UI styling. The product was built on an existing platform that didn’t support light and dark mode. To ensure WCAG compliance ahead of the European Accessibility Act, we chose a dark mode design, allowing greater control over contrast and readability.

Once the design was finalized, I worked closely with the developers during the technical implementation to ensure the design was executed to spec. Given the subtle transparency effects used throughout the interface to create visual cohesion, I provided detailed guidance to avoid inaccuracies or visual guesses.
